MHYF is now a nationally registered company instead of an association incorporated in Victoria under the Associations Incorporation Act.
We are in the process of seeking registration as a not-for-profit charity for mental health promotion.
There are vacancies on our Working Groups, Committee and Board of Directors. Nominations for election are welcome.
This is the topic of the after-dinner presentation to be delivered by Dr Adam Deacon, Head of the Alfred Hospital Youth Forensic Mental Health Unit, which is one of the two specialist units faced with the task of responding to Melbourne’s current youth crime wave.
Who are these young people? Why are they doing this? What can be done to deal with it? Is locking them up (in the school for criminals) the answer, or is there some better way? I can hardly wait to hear what Adam has to say.
To hear it, I’ll be at the MHYF Annual General Meting on Thursday 27th August at the Bleak House Hotel, corner of Beaconsfield Parade and Victoria Street, Albert Park, at 7pm. The business part of the meeting is at 7pm, followed by dinner, and then Adam’s presentation.

The 15th Winston Rickards Memorial Oration was given by Catherine Liddle, CEO of SNAICC, the national voice for aboriginal and Torres Strait islander children, on 17th June 2026 at Melbourne University.
The Oration: “Changing Minds and Changing Attitudes: Reframing systems to close the gap for aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children” was outstanding.
Catherine quietly referred to herself as a storyteller and soon showed this to be so. She began by talking about the country she was visiting and the country she came from. The picture she wove of herself growing up showed the central roles of country and culture for the development and wellbeing of indigenous children and their families. This was the foundation on which she built her thesis for “closing the gap”.

The Satellite Foundation is the organization to assist young people who are not only children of parents with mental illness (a potent risk factor for themselves developing illness) but also have the task of being carers for their disabled parents. MHYF strongly supports their endeavours and has contributed its logo to their website campaign.
INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRY AND ALLIED PROFESSIONS (IACAPAP): Connecting with colleagues world-wide………
INVOLVEMENT OF ALLIED PROFESSIONALS IN IACAPAP is highly valued. An international IACAPAP Group of Allied Professionals has been meeting during the past year, to brainstorm how IACAPAP can be of optimal use to the breadth of professionals active in the field. This led on to a very successful international webinar being organised by MHYFVic in September this year, which focussed, from an Australian perspective, upon the critical role of allied professionals in multidisciplinary teamwork. Over 400 people from 60 countries participated. Two more such webinars are planned for 2026, featuring other parts of the world and other urgent issues.
